  • Mastering the fundamentals and technological aspects of optics

The optics course is divided into 2 equal parts:

  1. Optics & images which deals with :

    • Coherence and interference (temporal, spatial and multi-waves)
    • Spectroscopy
    • Geometric optics
    • Photometry
    • Light sources (black body)
    • Detectors (signals & noise)
    • Propagation & diffraction (Huygens-Fresnel principle, plane wave decomposition, near and far field, diffraction by a slit, circular opening or a gratting)
    • Fourier optics and object-image relation (coherent and incoherent illumination, 4f configuration, filtering, diffraction limit), holography

  2. Optics & matter which deals with:

    • Electromagnetic waves in linear, non-linear & anisotropic media
    • Microscopic & macroscopic Maxwell equations, energy conservation, interface waves (Fresnel coefficients)
    • Anisotropic optics (phase tuning, second harmonic generation, ...)
    • Einstein coefficients
    • Lasers (pumping, cavity, oscillation condition, gain, applications)


Tutorial sessions include:

  • Geometrical Optics
  • Interference Phenomena
  • Detection and Noise
  • Coherent illumination
  • Incoherent illumination
  • Thin films
  • Surface plasmons
  • Anisotropic media
  • Generation of the second harmonic


The 4 preceptorship sessions focus on the following topics:

  • Spectroscopy
  • Microscopy
  • Multi-wave Imaging
  • Lasers

Laboratory sessions

The experimental work are organized in two sessions of 8 half-days each. Three manipulations will be carried out during each session. The usual duration of a manipulation is 2 to 3 half-days. Each two-person team will address four themes:

  • Interferential spectroscopy
  • Lasers
  • Diffraction and filtering of spatial frequencies
  • Light modulation with synchronous detection
by manipulating one among the proposed ones.
The two remaining "free" manipulations will be chosen from all proposed manipulations.

Requirements : Knowledge of Maxwell's equations (in vacuum and in a homogeneous environment), Poynting vectors, d'Alembert's equation, geometrical optics, notion on waves (wavelength, wave number, frequency, ...), light velocity, refractive index, Fourier transform, planar waves.

Evaluation mechanism : Course: written examination - Experimantal class: oral and proceedings.
